The type of concrete foundation that your contractor pours may be dependent upon the terrain where your home will be located and the weather that is common in the region where you will be residing. Learn about some common foundation types and services that contractors offer.
T-Shaped
A T-shaped foundation is often used in regions where the temperature falls below freezing. A footer and the foundation will be connected in a perpendicular fashion. The shape of the two pieces will resemble the letter T. The footer will extend wider than the foundation. It will be placed below the ground's freezing line.
First, a contractor will assess the property and determine how deep the footer will need to be anchored. Once the footer is anchored, a wall will be erected on either side of the footer. Lastly, a concrete slab will be poured in between the walls. The contractor will need to factor in curing times when installing a T-shaped foundation. Concrete sections are poured separately and must be given ample time to dry.
Slab-On-Grade
A slab-on-grade foundation consists of one singular slab of concrete that contains a built-in footer. This type of foundation is used in regions where freezing weather isn't a concern. Wire mesh is often used to reinforce a slab-on-grade foundation. A contractor will assess the land first. They will determine how much digging will need to be conducted during the excavation process. Then, they will lay a concrete form. Once the form is anchored, they will install wire mesh. Lastly, they will pour the concrete and wait for it to set.
Frost Grade
A frost-grade slab is designed similarly to a slab-on-grade. It is used in regions where the temperatures plummet. This type of foundation contains insulation. Polystyrene is a type of insulation that comes in rigid board formats. One piece of polystyrene will rest along each side of the foundation. Polystyrene will prevent heat loss in a home. A contractor will use the same excavation planning techniques as they do with a slab-on-grade foundation project.
Both the slab-on-grade and frost-grade foundation styles may require the use of gravel. Gravel is a material that aids with proper drainage. At the onset of a foundation planning phase, a contractor will assess drainage conditions. This will allow them to determine the gravel size and thickness that will be added to the foundation's design.
